Effective CO2 delivery for cardiac surgery
TEMED Insufflation Products are sterile, single-patient-use surgical devices designed for the effective delivery of carbon dioxide into the thoracic cavity during cardiac surgery.
The devices are designed to create and maintain a CO2-rich environment within the chest cavity, helping to reduce the risk of air embolism during cardiac procedures.
A key feature is the smooth, atraumatic hydrophobic diffuser tip, which does not ‘wet out’. This allows the device to continue delivering CO2 when exposed to fluid and means it can be positioned behind drapes or outside the clinician’s direct view without requiring manipulation to restore gas flow.
Why CO2 Delivery Matters
During open-heart surgery, residual air can remain within the heart and great vessels and may enter the arterial circulation. CO2 field flooding is used to reduce the amount of air available to become embolic and replace it with a gas that is substantially more soluble and rapidly absorbed.
The method of delivery is important. A diffuser distributes CO2 across a larger surface area at lower velocity, helping to minimise turbulence and establish a stable CO2-rich atmosphere within the surgical field. Published studies have demonstrated more effective air displacement with diffusing devices than with open-ended tubing.

Hydrophobic diffusing tip
Designed to continue delivering CO2 following contact with fluid, helping maintain effective diffusion in the wet surgical environment.
Diffuse CO2 delivery
Designed to distribute CO2 broadly rather than producing the concentrated jet associated with open-ended tubing, helping reduce turbulence and air entrainment.
0.2 micron microbial gas filter
Provides an integral filtered pathway between the medical-grade CO2 source and the surgical field.
Sterile, single-patient use
Purpose-designed surgical devices for CO2 insufflation during cardiac surgery.
Purpose-Designed for CO2 Insufflation
TEMED Insufflation Products are sterile, single-patient-use surgical devices specifically designed for the delivery of CO2 during cardiac surgery.
This is an important distinction from improvised methods such as suction lines, open-ended tubing and other devices designed for a different intended purpose. TEMED Insufflation Products provide a purpose-designed, filtered and diffused CO2 delivery pathway for use in the surgical field.
Two Insufflation Options
TEMED Insufflation Products are available in two configurations, providing the same purpose-designed approach to diffused CO2 delivery with different tubing specifications to suit procedural requirements.

TEMED Gas Diffuser
The TEMED Gas Diffuser incorporates a malleable reinforced section, allowing the distal section to be shaped for positioning within the thoracic cavity. Position and orientation are important to effective CO2 field flooding, and the malleable section allows the diffuser tip to be positioned appropriately within the surgical field.

TEMED Insufflator
The TEMED Insufflator provides the same hydrophobic diffusing-tip technology in a flexible tubing configuration, for procedures where a malleable section is not required.
